BYC closed after 75 years

Published on March 25, 2024

You may have seen the news last week from our allies and partners over at the British Youth Council.

After 75 years of empowering young voices across the UK they are having to close their doors due to ongoing financial challenges, caused by Brexit and a reduction in Erasmus+ funding since leaving the programme.

This closure strikes at the heart of the youth movement. The BYC’s invaluable work of empowering young voices, advocating for marginalized communities, and speaking out to restore opportunities for young people – like joining Erasmus+ - will be deeply missed.

Now with this loss, it’s more important than ever that we keep demanding change for young people, post-Brexit. Leaving Erasmus+ has stripped young people of freedoms and opportunities they once enjoyed. This recent announcement from the BYC underscores the devastating long-term impact of this decision on the next generation.

That's why together we must redouble our efforts to shed light on the repercussions of Brexit and our withdrawal from Erasmus+, not just for the sake of young people but for the crucial organisations defending their rights.

So, if you haven't already then sign the petition urging the government to Embrace Erasmus+ and rejoin the programme today!

Our deepest gratitude goes out to the dedicated staff, volunteers, partners, and funders of the BYC. These contributions have made a lasting impact on countless lives, both in the UK and globally.

Let’s urge decision-makers to prioritise listening to young voices, especially during these challenging times.
