Act now: Sign the petition to keep the UK in the ECHR

The European Court of Human Rights was set up in the aftermath of the Second World War to protect people from tyranny.

The UK played a formative role in creating the court, and was the first signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in 1950. But now, the same politicians that misled the public and championed Brexit are now calling on the UK to withdraw from the ECHR, and trying to make it a scapegoat for domestic challenges.

European Movement UK is calling on the government to commit to our membership of the European Court of Human Rights because it is the last line of defence of our rights and freedoms. Sign our petition now if you agree: Britain must remain in the ECHR.

Since the UK became a member of the European Court of Human Rights the court has intervened 466 times to uphold human rights against the government including:

• Victims of domestic abuse gained exemption from the “bedroom tax”.

• Ended the ban on gay people serving in the armed forces.

• Forced law change so that DNA records of innocent people are destroyed.

• Greater protection for the media after a journalist was fined for refusing to reveal the identity of a source.

ECHR protects the following rights:

• Right to a fair trial.

• Right to liberty and security.

• Freedom from slavery and human trafficking.

• Right to equality and freedom from discrimination.

• Right to family life.

• Freedom of speech.

• Freedom from torture and ill-treatment.

• Right to privacy.

• Right to property.
