Paddy Ashdown 1941-2018

The European Movement heard with the great sadness of the passing of Lord Paddy Ashdown.

“Paddy’s energy and commitment to the cause of greater European cooperation was widely recognized across the political spectrum. That is why he was regularly re-elected as President of the European Movement and why we always valued and benefitted from his advice and support.

“He will be greatly missed by many friends and admirers for his tireless and persuasive advocacy of the pro-European cause. When he argued, as he often did, that the European Union strengthens the ability of the nations of Europe to secure their values and interests in the world, he spoke for many millions of people throughout the UK who will feel today that a powerful voice has been silenced at a time when it is sorely needed.

“We are proud to have called him a friend and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time”.
