Today is Europe Day, a celebration of peace and unity in Europe marking the Schuman declaration.
At a speech in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, proposed a new form of political cooperation in Europe to help make war between Europe's nations unthinkable.
In a Europe Day article in The New European, Stephen Dorrell, chair of the European Movement UK, underlines:
- The importance of the Schuman declaration and how this relates to the liberal internationalist vision of the new French president, Emmanuel Macron.
- The need for the next UK parliament to keep an open mind on our relationship with the EU in the context of the promised "meaningful vote".
